Summary
Eddie swallowed hard, his throat aching from nearly an hour – or maybe days – of trying not to cry. Everything that happened since he moved to Texas six months ago, and everything that happened since moving back, descended upon him all at once, and it was heavy, and all he wanted to do was put it down or let it crush him, whichever came first.
And if he managed to do the former? If he did the scary thing and admitted it all? If he allowed himself to go to that place, that part of himself that he’d hidden away all these years? He could lose everything he’d fought to keep these last few years. He wasn’t sure if it was worth it.
Eddie blinked, praying that the tears in the corners of his eyes would stay right there. The breath he drew in was ragged. He never should have come here.

Summary
Eddie’s terrified. The weight lodged in his chest has shifted to complete and utter panic. His skin is hot. His eyes are burning. There was once a time when he’d say, I do not panic, but even that was a lie. Eddie panics a lot, actually. But he’s been taught how to manage it, how to make himself Jello, how to bring himself back to reality.
But this reality is what’s panic-inducing, and he can’t Jello himself out of this one.
Because he’s not scared for himself. Eddie’s killed men before. More than four at a time. Eddie’s, objectively, been in worse situations than this. Eddie’s been shot and stabbed and buried.
But he’s never been in a situation like this, with a four-year-old who means the world to him, a four-year-old who’s Buck’s son.
*
Or - Eddie takes Theo to the mall. The trip does NOT go as planned, when robbers infiltrate and they’re forced into a hostage situation.

Summary
“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”
Like some stranger named Buck had infiltrated every corner of his life. That’s what it felt like.
——
Amnesiac Eddie tries really hard to hate Buck. It doesn’t stick.

Summary
“Are you sure I can’t get you anything? Some coffee maybe?”
“Nah, it’s alright. Oreo was good company for my day off. Maybe I’ll see you around?”
“Yeah, maybe. Thanks again.”
Should Eddie say something to make him stay? He already refused coffee, but maybe he didn’t like coffee? Shit, he was reaching for the doorknob and Eddie had lost his chance. Eddie opened his mouth to say… something… and was interrupted by a feral screech that had the other man whipping around, just in time to catch a chest full of cat.
“What the fuck?,” he asked, looking down at Oreo, wide-eyed.
Or… Eddie’s cat goes missing and Buck finds her. Oreo gets extremely attached to Buck and won’t let him leave until she’s confident that he’ll come back. Clearly, she has to do everything for her owner.
