Luffy pressed a hand to his heaving chest, running his fingers across the puckered scar tissue. He took a long, slow breath, and then another. That’s done, he reminded himself firmly. It’s over. Ace is gone, but Sanji’s safe now–
Sanji’s face flashed before him, then Ace’s. His smile – his dying smile. Nami had told them all how Sanji had smiled when he’d left them. When he’d given himself up, to save them. When he’d sacrificed himself, because Luffy hadn’t been there to protect him. Because Luffy had failed – he’d been failing for years, he realised now. Ace had died with that question still on his lips, and Sanji had almost done the same.

Summary
It was easy to forget, sometimes, that everyone in the New World was there for a reason. With how strong the Strawhats had gotten, with how strong he had gotten, the thought that they could ever be hurt, let alone defeated, crossed Zoro’s mind less and less. It was at times like these, however, when he remembered. When he couldn’t afford to forget.
Everyone in the New World was there for a reason. Everyone in the New World was there because they were powerful – powerful enough to survive the absolute insanity that came with the Grand Line. And sometimes – just sometimes – even the Strawhats were faced with a dilemma like this.

“Robin-chan!” He shouted, his voice strained but carrying across the empty street to the receding tram nonetheless. Robin had been struggling to her feet, pushing off the hands of the people helping her up, looking for a way to get back to him, crossing her arms in front of her in vain, desperately trying to find a way to get him back – but she paused at his call, and he saw her look back at him. He kept smiling. “Go get Luffy – I’ll be waiting!”
The tram turned a corner and was gone, taking Robin safely with it. He kept watching the empty street, finally letting his smile drop as heavy footsteps approached. Gleaming black shoes filled his vision, and Sanji stared resolutely ahead as the man from before crouched by his side.
“Sacrificing yourself, eh? How noble.” Sanji snorted, curling his lip.
“Hardly,” he said, placing all of his conviction into his words. “Robin-chan will be back for me, and she’ll bring far more than you and your shitty henchmen can handle.”

It had occurred to him at some point after they had left Wano Kuni that the Vinsmokes must have passed through nearby waters, since Whole Cake Island had been so close.
Which was why, when the Strawhats docked at the first island they spotted after leaving Wano, Sanji was so nervous he almost considered staying on the ship while the rest of the crew explored the town.

Nami swiped part of the dowry on Whole Cake Island, figuring it was the least they were owed after everything it took to get their cook back.
What she didn’t realize was that one package had been addressed specifically to the bride: a gift meant to be used on the groom. Something he had worn a long, long time ago. And something his family apparently thought could be put to use again, no matter how small it had become.
Sanji did not take it well.
He dose not react how they expected.

“Luffy, what’s he talking about? What’s going on?” Sanji finally broke the silence.
“His village is starving,” Luffy replied matter-of-factly from his perch on the desk, one leg up supporting his arm, the other dangling. “They’ve had a bad fishing season, their land’s dry, and the jungle too dangerous for them to forage in. They tried to fish further in the ocean, but it’s all lost from the storm.”
The room fell quiet after Luffy’s explanation, waiting for a response. The man whispered ‘please’ over and over as tears fell from his eyes, fingers tightening in the sheets. Sanji glanced around the room, hands tucked in his pockets.
Finally, with a shrug, he spoke, “Then we feed them.”

Or the Straw Hats are sailing away from Wano when they come across a shipwrecked survivor. When they take him aboard, the man begs them to help his starving village. Sanji steps up to the task and the Straw Hats make their way to the remote island. Once there, Robin can't shake the feeling that something is off and her intuition is right as things take a turn for the worse when the crew is separated and members of the Straw Hats go missing.Bookmarked by chali
