"Like what?" Mike asked, though he suspected he knew what Will was going to say.
Mike saw it clear as day when Will decided to give up the ghost. He had always been able to recognize it, had always been the person Will said the hard things to, once, a long time ago.
"Like they matter. Like I matter. Why do you care, Mike?" His voice didn't waver, but his hands tightened slightly on the sketchbook. They were shaking. "You left."
Mike should have said something professional. He shouldn't have been in the room at all, actually, and it hit him like a punch to the gut. But since he was, he should have redirected, should have held the line, should have been the man he'd spent the last eight years becoming. Everything in him told him to back down. Max was somewhere on the other side of the building, probably already noting how long this was taking.
"I never stopped caring," Mike said anyway.
or: special agent mike wheeler returns home to hawkins, indiana to help the local police solve a string of child disappearances and murders. what he finds there isn't just a crabby old police chief and a confused town, it's the ghosts of his past come to life. that, and will byers, his ex-boyfriend.

todd anderson has one mission - graduate top of his class from welton academy, get into yale, and finally prove his parents wrong. he is not just a worse, younger version of his older brother, no... todd anderson is different. better, even, than jeffrey, and nothing is going to get in his way.
until he gets to campus on the first day of junior year and meets his roommate -- neil perry, 4.0 gpa earner, top of their class (for now) and welton's golden boy. but even the shiniest of pearls can have cracks, and todd may just end up finding out where neil's are.
(Or, vermont, 2005. todd has just transferred to welton academy in his junior year after attending balincrest since sixth grade. at welton, todd finds confidence, gains more friends than he'd ever hoped for, and finds an academic rival in neil perry -- all while trying (and failing) to get his parents to pay attention to him for once. meanwhile, neil deals with a controlling father and falling in love, knox tries to get a certain someone to notice him, and charlie is oblivious.)

Summary
the day before possibly the most important audition in his career up to this point, neil perry loses his copy of the invention of love. it disappeared somewhere between his agent's office in midtown and the shoebox apartment he shares with his best friend in jackson heights. thus, the search for another copy begins. along the way, neil stumbles upon anderson's used & rare books. he steps in inside, hoping against all hope that this store will have what he's looking for. otherwise, he can kiss that audition (and his agent) goodbye.
to make a long story short, neil gets another copy of the play. he also gets a date with a tall, blond bookstore owner whose eyes are blue-grey like the ocean, and he has a laugh that makes neil's heart do funny things in his chest.

MJ hummed, his arms crossing over his chest. He leaned a bit closer, voice low. "Good boy. That's why you're my favorite, you know."
That was another thing about his boss. He was a huge flirt. But it didn't mean anything, it never did. He was the GM of a fine dining establishment— charming patrons was a part of the job description. Maybe sometimes that blinding ray of charm was flashed upon Will, but he had just figured it was hard for MJ to turn it off. Hell, when Will clocked out it was rather difficult to shake his customer facing personality, too. Banter had always been easy between the two of them, but it didn't mean anything.
But 'good boy'? That was new.
