Summary
Carlisle has been thoroughly ashamed of his nature since the moment a pang of hunger jolted him awake in some London back alley. He has spent every moment since trying to atone for his existence. Though he is satisfied most days, he is even more ashamed - even more terrified - of the specific, gnawing bloodlust that follows dark-haired backwoodsmen.
Somehow still reeling from the loss of his wife 20 years ago, Charlie Swan realizes he's also managed to lose his only daughter. Frantic to explain the sudden and bizarre turn of events that ripped Bella from him, Charlie decides to risk losing what little he has left by playing investigator. But vampiric laws have powerful enforcers, and there might be good reason for Charlie to stay in the dark.
tldr: Carlisle's gay ass is so repressed that attraction and bloodlust are tied inexorably. Charlie gets closer to Carlisle and finds more there than answers.

"Mom went through a phase where she was really into astrology," Bella's voice is soft and melodic. She stands next to Charlie, their shoulders nearly touching. He can feel the coldness that seems to radiate off of all of the Cullens.
Charlie huffs out a laugh. "Yeah?" Renee had always been into that kind of spiritual stuff.
"Uh huh. She talked about it all the time when I was in middle school. I didn't really care about it, but I thought parts of it were cool. I liked learning about the different phases of the moon, and what each one meant."
Charlie hums. He nods to the moon. "What does this phase mean?"
"Waning crescent," Bella says. "A time for rest and relaxation."
Charlie snorts, his heart feeling a little lighter at Bella's answering grin. "Yeah. After the last few years, I think that's exactly what this damn town needs."
