Mary pressed her back against the wall. She should announce her presence, cough and enter. Apologize for the life her death caused. But she couldn’t move. Cas—she thought it was Cas anyway—sighed, and she listened to his footsteps as he crossed the kitchen, presumably to join her son.
“Dean—” Cas began, but before he could speak, Dean interrupted him.
“—Cas, she’s not my mom.”
“Of course she’s your mother.”
“No! I mean, fuck, I don’t know what I mean,” Dean let out a shuddering breath. “She’s different, Cas.”

“So- so you’d basically be using some sort of sigil to mask our human souls from the Empty?” Sam’s voice interrupts Dean’s desperate train of thought and startles him back to the present.
“Yes.” Jack is nodding, smiling, all gap-toothed and kindergarten positivity.
“And the only parts of us the Empty would see are whatever dead leaves the angels and demons left in our gutters?” Dean raises his eyebrows.
“Exactly.”
He lets out a low whistle. There’s a living warmth finally coming back into his complexion. Not done yet, Winchester, still one more rescue mission. “It’s gotta be me. I’m going.”

“You’ll be here all week? Terrible that you’re workin’ on Valentine’s Day,” Doris tuts disapprovingly, “you ought to be spendin’ it with your special someone.”
“I ain’t got a special someone right now,” Dean assures her kindly, leaning back in his chair, tapping the table that separates him from Doris and her husband, “and I don’t mind working.”
“Well, of course you do!” Doris exclaims.
“I work most holidays, I really don’t mind –”
“No, you’ve got a special someone,” Doris corrects, eyeing him critically, smirking in a way that crinkles all of her many wrinkles, “a woman like me can tell.”

Summary
In which Amara doesn't bring back Mary, she brings back John Winchester.
Dean is uncertain what Amara's meaning is when she brings John back, and struggles with coming to terms with the new family dynamic. Sam tries harder to keep the peace than he used to, and Cas does not get along with John at all- though he tries. Testosterone is at an all-time high as these four men struggle to coexist in the hunting world with very different ideologies.
We explore just how much the brothers have changed in the ten years without their father's guidance, the trauma they still haven't resolved, and the feelings that Dean and Cas hold for one another despite the very real and new barrier that is John.
