Takashi snorted. “He wanted six, but I held him to four.” He frowned. “You know, these books he has are really stupid. They’re all about talking animals wearing overalls or shapes that go on unrealistic adventures. And none of these people even have jobs. Where is that going to get him in life?”
“Honey, he’s two,” said Misae. “He doesn’t need to get anywhere in life, except to bed, and all the books need to do is make him go there.”
“Well, they’re not even very good at that,” Takashi countered. “Or we wouldn’t need four of them.”Abe Takashi thinks he might go crazy if he has to read this stupid bedtime story to his toddler one more time. And then he has a genius idea.
This idea will have both short- and long-term consequences.

Summary
Takaya frowned. He didn’t begrudge Ren his illogical happiness, but the thing was, when he was happy he wasn’t paying attention to all the things that could be wrong with him. Takaya would just have to do it for him, but that was all right. That’s what he was for.
Mihashi makes a brave request, but he's so indirect about it that Abe doesn't notice. Also, it happens to remind Abe of the ever-present specter of frostbite, which derails the proceedings considerably.

Nemera would rather his underage grandson inherit the throne than that ill-favored goblin child of his; if he is dead and unable to prevent it, at least he will stay around to observe that boy's failures.
Or, Nemolis and Varenechibel IV are dead. Ulis left them hanging around, however, so they are going to make sure they witness any important or mildly interesting happening of Edrehasivar VII's reign.

It had never occurred to him, Moist reflected as he changed his suit, that the man would actually die. He was something permanent, a fixed point, never changing. Moist would have compared him to the sun or moon, but they moved about too much to work in his analogy. He’d often thought that he’d die before Vetinari, and sometimes, if he was being uncharitable, he’d thought that he’d die because of Vetinari. It seemed that was no longer a risk to be concerned about. He missed the feeling immensely. Send a prodding Dark Clerk to summon a man from his own home often enough, and he’d get nostalgic for it. Moist could almost feel a hand tapping at his back just remembering it.
He frowned. It didn’t feel like a memory.
“Mr. von Lipwig,” said a female voice, patiently, “please follow me to the palace.”
