Stannis scraped the last dregs of stew from her bowl to buy herself time. “I don’t know where Robert is,” she said. “I wonder that myself every day.”
Renly’s head shot up in surprise. Something about his miserable expression made Stannis want to say more, but the words refused to arrange themselves. Gingerly, she reached for his hand. It was small and cold within her own.
“Sometimes,” she said slowly, “You do all that you can, and it’s not enough. Life is not a song. That’s as true for Robert as it is for us.”
Renly did not look convinced. “There must be something we can do. If not Robert, then surely you—”
“There is,” Stannis agreed tightly. “We can do our duty. Hold Storm’s End, and trust Robert to come back for us.”Or,
