Going back to Fukuoka might just kill him a little bit on the inside. Last time he was there he was Shouto’s age and a real-life zombie. He hated it. He hated Fukuoka so much, still hates what it represents to him now. Suffocating hot summers that made breathing difficult. Winters that weren’t cold enough but were gloomy, wet and woefully lacking in snow. Tears and jeers and loneliness. Pain and medicine and constant hospital visits and surgeries and numbness and ugliness and watching his deformed body in the mirror peel and change and shift and scar and become less his while it got grosser, hideous and even more unlovable. He was in tears every day for nearly two years.
Touya wonders if the smell of the seaside air would still make him cry at the age of 23. Truly, he’s a masochist to allow his morbid curiosity a victory.
