Martin is sneaking a cat into the archives.
He hadn’t planned for his day to start like this, but it had looked so sad when he’d found it around the side of the building, and it hadn’t protested when he’d come over (in fact it had been rather friendly) and the next thing he knew he was smuggling a cat into his place of work with vague intentions of pretending he was doing followup on a statement after his lunch break to take it out to a vet to see if it was microchipped.

The next morning, when Martin walks into the archives, the cat is sprawled over the top of Sasha’s chair.
“How are you here.” He demands. “I took you to the shelter twice.”OR
A cat takes up residence in the archives through sheer persistence and liberal weaponization of adorableness. Inadvisable name choices are made.

Ilya’s obviously aware that there’s something up with Shane, okay? No one who spent their formative years (as well as their twenties and thirties) obsessively watching Shane Hollander Best Goal YouTube clips could glimpse what was going on with the Metros last season and think that nothing had changed. He asked and asked over the summer months, and Shane denied and denied and denied to the point where Ilya had to wonder if Shane knew there was something up with himself. But that was silly. Of course Shane knew.
Ilya likes to think he’s the Shane Hollander whisperer. He knows about Shane’s dormant exhibitionism kink and how to trigger it without triggering what neither of them like to call an anxiety attack. He knows the difference between Shane's hungry stomach grumbles and impending-stomach-ache stomach grumbles. There’s probably not a freckle on Shane’s body Ilya hasn’t licked before, if he’s being honest. That’s not really impressive or a key to revealing Shane’s psyche or anything, but it’s probably worth mentioning.

JJ didn't think the others saw it. Hayden, maybe, but Jackie was the only WAGs's name Shane had committed to memory so Hayden never brought it up. JJ didn't have a wife or girlfriend. He had his hookups and the names of the best restaurants in each city they player in. If JJ had a dog, Shane would probably mix its name up with Drapeau's. The others didn't get that however pathetic or sad they might think Shane, Shane thought the same of them tenfold when they missed shots at practice or ate fast food on weekdays. Shane wasn't being prissy or funny when he said, don't embarass me—JJ still doesn't know exactly what it was, but he doesn't care to find out.
Shane had poured everything into his team (possessively: it was his team) and he asked them to give it back that day, so they delivered. When Shane smiled at them afterwards, it felt like love.

By the time they hit Richmond the sickly Virginia heat had crept in, wet and heavy, and his back was becoming one with the leather seat. Even Scully, who in his mind was the human equivalent of a cool Spring breeze, was looking—well, with her sweat-flecked hair and her eyes hooded against the morning sun, she looked just fine to him.
A humid weekend in Southern Virginia and a case that’s going nowhere fast. They edge closer to one another, for want of anything else to do.
