Geralt gets his blessing from the Djinn. He thought he had 3 wishes. Turns out he had 4.
Jaskier vanishes on the mountain. With Cintra close to becoming a war zone, he doesn't have time to right his wrong. Geralt will break the wishes from the Djinn but he needs to find his child surprise first.
Julian was attending his cousins name-day celebration. It was boring, the bard was dreadful and the entertainment was dull. When he'd wished for a little more excitement he hadn't wanted Nilfgaard to attack! Now he's on the run with his cousin. he has to protect Ciri at all cost.
TLDR: If Geralt had never met Jaskier.

It was definitely a bad idea to approach this clearing. The man impaled on a spike was probably warning enough for most. But Jaskier was running low on material and hey, if he was about to be devoured by whatever monster he was about to find, it felt like a fairly appropriate way to go. Killed in the line of duty and whatnot.
There’s another man skewered much in the same way, what he thinks might be a horse, and-
Gods, that looks like a little girl.
Or: Jaskier decides to look after the shit he'd supposedly shovelled.
