Her first meeting with Dick was something awkward and carefully orchestrated, but that’s usually the one that comes to mind most when she thinks about the beginning of their relationship.Jay thought it was a dream come true when she was picked up off the street by the richest guy in Gotham, especially when he proved himself to be a decent man. The only problem is the asshole who lives down the hall from her.
Bruce and Dick had a good thing going for almost seven years before he decided to take in a random kid, and Dick makes his problem with it abundantly clear.

The logical course of action would tell him to wait until summer, when the aches and pains were nothing more than a phantom, but the more satisfying conclusion held his interest. Four months—then he'd settle what he came to this graveyard of a city to do. It would be more satisfying in winter. A bookend to the life of Jason Todd, a cremation that he would rise from the ashes of. As who, he wasn't really sure.

He’d been so worried, he hadn’t been able to sleep, hadn’t been able to do much of anything but search, albeit aimlessly. Stupid, he thought, suddenly angry at himself. Sloppy. Probably the exact reaction Ra’s had hoped for, planned to prey upon.
