Wei Ying, orphaned and starving, begins life in the slums of Yunmeng as a feral, skittish child—alone, unseen, and constantly fighting to survive. He trusts no one, and every act of kindness feels like a trap. He’s clever, quick, and endlessly brave, but scarred deep by hunger, cruelty, and abandonment.
One winter, a stranger gives him a talisman bearing the symbol of a distant place called the Cloud Recesses. Wei Ying doesn’t believe in salvation—but hunger and loss eventually draw him to Caiyi Town, where fate intervenes.
There, he meets Lan Zhan—a cold-eyed, rule-bound child of privilege from the Gusu Lan Clan. Their first meeting is a disaster. Lan Zhan finds himself returning the smile. “Go home,” he urges gently, because it’s cold, and Wei Ying does not look like he’s dressed warmly enough to be out in the streets like this.
Wei Ying’s smile dims. “A-Ying sleeps here when it’s cold,” he tells Lan Zhan. “When it’s summer, A-Ying likes to stay by the pond!”
Lan Zhan frowns, looking at the alley around them. His stomach churns at the thought of leaving Wei Ying there. “Has Wei Ying eaten?”
