Dan enters the Shatterdome at 18, meeting Phil, a 22 year old who helps others find their co-pilot but has not had the same luck in his own past. Dan coming into the Pan Pacific Defense Corps changes both of their lives. The fic spans the better part of their first year as a team, including their rocky first drift, their catastrophic first kaiju fight which seriously injures Phil (including electrical burns and soft tissue damage but there is no detailed description of his injuries, as well glimpses of Phil's recovery.
