For Matthias, volunteering is the culmination of his Career training, the perfect way to bring honor and glory to his District and his mentor. For Nina, volunteering is an act of self-preservation, a way to save a life before her involvement with the fledgling rebellion gets her own name pulled out of a Reaping Ball.

    Whatever their reasons, both of them want to make it through the Games alive—which means that the other must die. But in the Arena, they find that have no choice but to form an uneasy alliance—and that their hearts want even more, far more than the Games will ever let them have.
