Ilya sat on his stool in the hotel bar, adjusting the cuff of his dress shirt and taking a steady sip of his (surprisingly good) vodka. He subtly tracked the man across the room with his eyes and sighed internally, his mind wandering to all of the other things he’d rather be doing during this stretch of time. But of course, when the CIA knocks on the door to your hotel room at 4 a.m. asking if you’d be open to doing one final job, the illusion of choice is, well, an illusion.

There was this kid he went to school with until high school who played violin like Shane played hockey — all encompassing. The first day of eighth grade he told everyone about his new long-distance girlfriend, a curly haired cellist from Montreal who he’d met at his summer conservatory.
It wasn't Shane's fault that hockey camp wasn’t co-ed.
And then it never quite stopped being like that.
Everyone was always meeting someone. Everyone kept falling in love.

He probably should have at least regretted how he did it -- when and where and with how much thought. He probably should think about how Alexei had sniffed and wiped his nose after he’d walked through the beads. (It was a very emotional day.) How big Alexei’s pupils had been when he’d pinned Ilya against the wall. (It was a very dim room.) But he didn’t think about it. And he didn’t regret it.
He did wonder how his mother felt about it.

He brought the cigarette up to his lips and sucked in. His chest burned.
Yesterday the door was ajar when he passed by his parents’ bedroom. Standing still in the hallway he watched for a minute as his mother, sitting like a soldier at her vanity, used her fingers to spread a thick peach-colored paint across her left cheekbone and around her eye.
Ilya took another breath. He lit his lungs on fire.

Summary
Shane walks back into the living room now, a kitten yawn rounding in the back of his throat as he raises his linked hands above his head and arches his spine in a slow open that stretches the muscles. He drops his arms with a heavy exhale, a comfortable pull through his spine at the stretch and he eyes the empty couch.
His Ilya is missing.
Shane turns his head and muffles a yawn into his elbow, rolls his shoulders and scans the room, the now empty coffee table, and hears the soft thud of dishes in the sink over the music and uses the obvious clues to take himself to the kitchen.

Shane was fourteen the first time a number felt like safety.
The nutritionist worked out of an office in Kanata, framed certificates, a calm voice, laminated charts with columns. She explained it simply: fuel in, output required, timing of each. She said it was a starting point.
Shane took notes in the margins the way he took notes on everything—completely, past what was required. Yuna had found the nutritionist herself, sat beside him, and took notes too.
Like mother, like son.

It’s the refrain of Shane’s life. Everything circles back to this: a lot of kids looking up to you. That’s why you need to spend your summers doing ad campaigns. That’s why you need to let a social media manager handle your every interaction online. That’s why we need to sit here after family dinner with flash cards rehearsing the different ways you’ll answer reporters’ questions after you face Boston next week, and, oh, when we’re done, let’s do some French vocabulary flashcards, too, because it’s important to the Francophone fans that you’re thinking about them. There are lots of Asian Francophones in Quebec, Shane. Almost 13% of primary schoolers are of Asian descent, compared to less than 4% of hockey players. Isn’t that pathetic?
As if Shane doesn’t know that it’s pathetic. As if Shane doesn’t know what he fought through to get here.
Abruptly, Shane is furious.
