Summary
Shane yawns, his mouth stretching big and pink even as he tries to hide it behind a fist. “Why are you up?”
“For no reason,” Ilya says, and he wishes his English weren’t so clumsy when he’s tired. Shane likes it, says that it reminds him of how Ilya sounded when they first met, and sometimes Ilya feels the same way. Mostly he wishes he dreamed in the language he was speaking when he fell in love. Then, if he were lucky, he could finally stop having this fucking dream.
Anya trots over and launches herself onto the couch, her tail wagging ever so slightly as she nudges her nose against the side of Ilya’s leg. Shane follows her and says “Off,” stern. Then he sits in the spot that she vacated. “Do you feel okay?”
“I just can’t sleep.”
“Ilya,” Shane says, “baby. Can I stay up with you?”

Summary
Nothing could ever get rid of the ache Ilya feels when Shane backs out of his driveway, at the sight of the forced smile on his face Ilya can see through the windshield. He stands on the porch and he plays a sad, desperate game where the only rule is that Ilya lives another life where Shane does not have to go.
But after a little while some of the details make this game impossible. It’s a Tuesday night and Shane is letting Ilya work the knots out of his back, but he’s wearing a Metros shirt. Even after other-life Ilya tears this shirt off, throws it onto the living room floor to get his hands on the smooth warm expanse of his boyfriend’s back, it still feels wrong. The shirt lays crumpled at the edge of Ilya’s fantasy, forcing too many buts: but if Shane were on the Metros he would never be in Ottawa on a Tuesday, but even if he were they wouldn’t be slow and syrupy like Ilya is imagining, but Shane never lets Ilya massage him during the season because the Metros physio told him not to let an amateur mess up his work.

“JJ. You’re freaking me out. Either tell me what’s going on or find someone else to handle it.”
There was a big sigh that came in loud through the phone, and then JJ said, “Al can’t cast her second spell.”
Miya had been home for the first spell. Al had wanted to read after lights out and it had worked a little too well. The whole family had stayed up late and thrown an impromptu party in the living room. Al had been reliably casting Light for about a year, at various strengths and ranges. The first spell was always like that. Instinctual, involuntary. It was the second spell that made the wizard, Esther always said. The one that came from study rather than feeling. Miya hadn’t heard anything about a second spell from Al yet. She’d just been too wrapped up in things like Medieval Japanese Buddhism and matrix decomposition to worry about the minutiae of her family’s life. She’d assumed that if there were anything important, her mom or dad would’ve let her know. That clearly had not been the case.

Summary
Sometimes Ilya sees Shane and all he wants to do is bite him. Not in a sexy way, although that comes and goes, too, but in a way that scares him. It’s big, how badly Ilya wants to sink his teeth into his boyfriend, shake. He wants to be tucked in Shane’s chest, all the way under his ribs, like somehow by devouring him Ilya is the one who will get to crawl inside him and live there.
Most of the time Ilya can divert this urge of his. He’ll suck marks down Shane’s neck and that will be enough, or he’ll bring Shane a snack and watch him eat it, the way his throat bobs as he swallows. But there’s something about today that makes it so when Ilya walks by Shane on the couch, he just knows none of that will work this time.

The beginning of the process was fairly easy. Ilya turned on the new phone and followed the directions to start the transfer, but it stalled out at the same step as it had for the genius person. Ilya spent some time scrolling through Reddit and checking if it was his photos, or maybe his contacts, until he saw a post from BigPapi27: my problem was with my voicemail lolll never checked it and it was full as hell. had to clear it out and then everything was fine.
Well. That was probably it. Ilya didn’t think he’d checked his voicemail since he’d played for Boston. He wasn’t even sure where it lived on the phone, so he googled that too, and found out that not all the notifications on the phone call app were from missed calls. A lot of them were, but just as many were voicemails he hadn’t known were taking up all this space, causing him problems.
And, he realized as he scrolled, so many of them were from Shane.
(or, shane starts leaving ilya voicemails. years later, ilya finds them all)

“Shane.” Ilya takes Shane’s head in his hands, squeezes his cheeks so that Shane looks puffy, absurd. Beloved. “I am saying that to me, even though you are retired, you will always be No. 1 hockey player. Fuck Wayne Gretzky.”
That’s what does it, as Ilya knew it would. Shane rears back, spluttering, outraged, trying not to laugh.
“Oh, I have committed blasphemy now. They will take back my citizenship, big crime, very sad.”
Shane smoothes his hands along Ilya’s calves, rests his fingertips on Ilya’s ankles. “Fuck Wayne Gretzky,” he says. He looks like he can’t believe what he’s saying. Ilya wonders, distantly, if he can get it on tape to play back to himself when things feel particularly bleak. “We can live in exile together. I don’t care. You’re my, my best, my second best hockey player forever too.”

Shane decides he has to retire. Ilya, of course, will go with him.
