Summary
In 109 AC, Viserys Targaryen breaks the tradition and precedent that made him the King of the Seven Kingdoms and names his daughter, Rhaenyra, the heir to the Iron Throne.
Before the ink on the royal decree is dry, opportunists and enemies of the princess gather and start to plot and scheme to strip Rhaenyra of her title. The men of the realm might prefer the Realm’s Delight over the Lord Flea Bottom, but they do not intend to allow a woman to ascend the Iron Throne.
Caught in the web of other people’s ambitions, the princess finds herself doubting everyone; sometimes, it seems even the man who bestowed the title upon her is working against her… And when her uncle returns to King’s Landing, Rhaenyra will have to decide if she’s willing to forsake her duty and risk her father’s love for her heart’s desires…

Summary
“The king must put the realm first,” Jaehaerys told Viserys shortly before his death. “The realm must always come before our own desires and dreams.”
It wasn’t until he saw the bleak future in his dream and faced the impossible choice that Viserys truly understood the old king’s words. With a heavy heart, he chose the stability of the realm over his beloved daughter.
And so, Aegon becomes the heir, while Rhaenyra is pushed down the line of succession and sent away to the grim fortress of their ancestors. The king promises her gold and freedom to live her life however she wants, but Rhaenyra knows those are only pretty words to soften the blow of her father’s rejection.

“A princess alone in the dark?” he whispers into her ear, making her shiver. “Are you asking for trouble, sweet niece?”
“Are you the trouble you speak of, uncle?” Rhaenyra asks, still not turning to look at him. “Or perhaps you will protect me from the dangers lurking in the dark.”
He chuckles huskily. “I am no gallant knight, princess. I thought you would know that by now.”
“Should I scream then? Cry for help?”
He leans even closer, his warm breath brushing against her bare shoulder. “That depends. Do you want to be rescued, princess?”
She spins around and tilts her head to meet her uncle’s gaze. “Perhaps not tonight,” she murmurs, staring deep into his eyes.
One corner of Daemon’s lips tugs upwards in a crooked smile. “I thought so,” he says.

Summary
