Summary
“Oh, don’t even worry about it. I got you something, Cap,” Evan Dykstra excitedly reaches in his bag. “For you and your hubby.”
Shane sets his shoes in the locker, but he cannot help but glance over.
Dykstra pulls out a glass jar from the bag and crosses the room, proudly setting it on Ilya’s shelf in his locker.
Shane’s ears burn. His heart hammers. His chest clenches and his fingers go numb as he stares at the jar, proudly labeled with the letters PDA._____
Shane is anxious about joining the Centaurs, fearing that they will be assholes like they Voyagers were, especially when it comes to his relationship with Ilya. When the team presents the two of them with a PDA jar as a joke at their first practice, Shane spirals and takes it seriously, thinking the team is setting rules for them. Things eventually come to a head when Ilya is injured during practice, and Ilya realizes the misunderstanding that took place between his husband and his team.

“Ah.”
“‘Ah’,” Ilya repeats, giving him a look before he looks back to the tidily stacked frozen mouse packages in the freezer and makes a face as a little badly-hidden shudder moves through him. “Why the fuck do you have mice in your freezer, Shane? You are doing serial killer shit now? This is why you have cottage in the middle of nowhere? For serial killer things?”
“It’s for Spaghetti,” Shane says.
Ilya gives him an absolutely horrified look at that and turns a little green, which makes him remember that Spaghetti isn’t just his snake's name.
“Not food!” He rushes to explain. “Not food spaghetti! Snake Spaghetti!”
“What the fuck are you even saying right now,” Ilya says, looking honestly a little concerned that Shane might have something going wrong in his head.
(Distancing himself from almost twenty years of owning a snake, Shane can indeed see why this situation might be a little alarming for someone on the outside looking in.)
(It also clues him in to the fact that maybe it’s not just Spaghetti who should have gotten a little adjustment period.)

"Why," The officer repeats, leaning forward, "Were you at his apartment? You have to admit, it's pretty strange to—"
"We're together." Shane interrupts, tone flat. It doesn't make his stomach churn to say it out loud. It doesn't make him want to shrink into the uncomfortable plastic chair he's sitting in. "We had a three-day stretch with no games, so I was staying with him."
The officer bristles. He has a nametag, but Shane has no interest in reading it. He seems, overall, unconvinced. Shane supposes if he was a cop who was clearly awful at his job and stuck on the night shift, he'd probably be just as miserable.
"Okay," He sighs, "Let's start again. Tell us what happened, from the beginning."
