Death huffs a breath, kneeling down to allow Kitty and Puss passage.
“Leave your bag,” he gestures to Kitty, and to her credit, she only pauses for a second before dropping their rucksack at the base of the tree. “I have a task for you three.”
[Or: in which it is the Day of the Dead, and grief has a way of calling for help. Perrito follows, and Kitty and Puss learn more of Perrito's duty with Death.]

It’s a nice place; walls a soothing ivory colour, windows pristine even in a dusty, dilapidated town like this, a few small potted plants scattered around the room as a splash of green.
So it’s an otherwise nice place, and the receptionist has a pleasant smile, but something about it has Perrito on edge. A warning tickling on the edges of his mind.

Death bares his fangs at Perrito. “He's wasted eight chances already, he won’t change. Not now, perro.”
“He just needs a little help!” Perrito chirps. “It’s good practice for a therapy dog!”
Despite himself, Death snorts. “He’s going to be one hell of a case to crack.”
