“You used to be so sweet," Bill cooed, cupping Ford's jaw through the leather, his thumb tracing the line of Ford's cheekbone. "So good." He tilted his head, studying Ford's face with an artist's eye. He scratched gently behind Ford's ear—fingernails just barely catching the sensitive skin where skull met neck—and felt the way Ford's breath hitched, felt the way his whole body shuddered at the touch. "Where's my good, sweet boy, huh? Where'd he go?"

"But it can wait until tomorrow!" he blurted out. "Or…whenever you say I can work on it next."
That seemed to do the trick. Fiddleford's eyes lit up with delight, the disappointment vanishing like it had never existed, and Ford heard his other hand shifting against the fabric of his pant leg. Ford's body tensed, every nerve ending alight, waiting for the sound.
Click-click.
"My, my…" Fiddleford’s voice dropped an octave, rough like gravel dragged over velvet. "Ain't you a quick learner? Such a smart boy."

Ford's eyes filled. The tears came fast—too fast, shocking. They spilled over, tracking down the creases of his face, catching in the stubble along his jaw. His jaw tightened, and when he spoke, his voice cracked like thin ice.
"I've always loved him, Em." The words came out ragged, torn from somewhere deep, somewhere he'd kept locked and hidden and carefully maintained. "You know that."

Fiddleford stopped laughing. He looked at Ford.
"Research exercise," he repeated.
"Yes." Ford felt the familiar architecture of a hypothesis assembling itself, something to stand behind, something with structure. "There must be a reason everyone we know is so thoroughly enthralled with intercourse. Statistically, the data is overwhelming. It warrants investigation."
