He found his own lips stretching into a grin. “Maybe that’s why I see him as a friend,” he muttered.
Compared to Qian Jin, or even himself, who’d directly caused the deaths of people they supposedly cared about, who could only let the emotions consume them, mourning in hypocrisy, Liu Xiao’s indifference felt like a jagged reminder of reality.
A lot of people were hypocrites. They would try all the branching paths in the world if it could change their lot in life—Li Tianchen had attempted to take a different one as well.
But Liu Xiao had stuck to his one, manipulating the pieces on the chessboard without truly participating in the game. Rather than try and grab ahold of every parallel line, he wanted to erase them—to turn them into one, no matter which one it was.
Li Tianchen had to catch up to him.
Having a clear path was something to envy, after all. Especially when you were like him, lost in an endless forest with the screams of his sister and mother and father following his every step. He wanted to be as composed as Liu Xiao and break free of that.
