Grace looks up, startled. “What?”
Rocky taps in a movement Grace can tell is keen concentration, his carapace leaning towards the intercom where Grace can only hear static, crackled feedback.
“Something moving in ship.” Rocky tap tap taps again, pauses. “Not human, statement.”
Grace blanches.

Summary
Dr. Ryland Grace saved two worlds and, against all odds, lived. He has a nice life now. He teaches kids, helps run atmospheric research for a species that can’t perceive light, and lives inside a bubble on a planet that would crush and cook him simultaneously if it got the chance. Which is fine. He’s qualified for all of those things.
The things he is not qualified for, however, include: planetary malfunctions of cosmic proportions, trauma surgery, and falling for a one-armed ex-convict who swears more in five minutes than Ryland has in his entire life.
The universe, as usual, did not check his résumé.
