Summary
Isabel Conklin understands death better than most. She knew grief, and how to survive it (well… sort of).
Often, she wondered how being dead would feel; if there really was a heaven, or hell. If she was going to be awarded a heavenly rest, or be sent directly to the purgatory of the worst fears.
Probably the latter. But no one really knew, no one cared to know about her most deep, intricate, self-harming thoughts about dying. Jeremiah wouldn't understand it… even if he had been closer to it, even when he still grieved his mother intensely. He would give her that insane look, laugh in her face and probably keep chugging his beer.
Of course, Conrad would listen to her. He would probably sit on the communal washing machine back at Brown, or well, Stanford, and let her vent out about it. Even when his mom was dying, even if he had told her once that he was scared of it. The prospect of the unknown.
So, Belly is thinking of him when she wakes, in a strange room, so white it's almost blinding.

There was something so hot about seeing Conrad Fisher grade a paper. Maybe it was the way he held the pen, or how his brow furrowed — which was often, because 5th grade kids were hilarious —, even his posture was insane, legs open, hunched over the kitchen counter. They were still working on transforming the second room to an office, and his desk was yet to be shipped. So, Belly had to watch him work on the kitchen for days. And it was bad for her panties. Mostly because Conrad refused to fuck her while he was working, so she had become restless. When he got in the zone, he was insufferable.
Also, did he need his glasses or simply wanted her to combust?

How could he go to Jeremiah to ask for his blessing without telling her? Now, Halloween made so much sense. How giddy he'd been, open and free. Giving her his heart in a bag full of her favorite candy. Conrad had taken it all away, like he always did. And Belly was so tired… so, so tired. Maybe if she could get closer to the water…
It was cold against her feet, but a swig at the tequila made her warm. Maybe she could sleep here? Right there. Someone — Conrad — would find her in the morning, and everything would be alright again. But she couldn't get deeper. Belly felt him before she heard him. The wind and the waves almost make his voice sound like a dream.
"Belly! Come back inside," Oh, she can feel that he had his older brother's voice. "I'm not dragging your dead body out of the ocean if you drowned out there, Isabel."
"Leave me alone, Conrad," It comes out slurred.
"Come out of the water, Belly!"

Belly had sworn he wouldn't get to her. That whatever pull Conrad Fisher had on her had been severed six weeks ago, at Susannah's funeral. Where she had lost her mind, and arguably, the love of her life.
But there he was, charmingly handsome, with that competitive streak. Smirky mouth, long limbs, screaming to the top of his lungs as he chases her at laser tag. The fluorescent light was sharpening the angles of his face. He didn't look tortured or as if the weight of the world was on his shoulders. He was the boy she had a crush on at 15. The one chasing her down with a laser gun, focused on getting her, on the exact tactic to get the last shot.
