Summary
After the Quest of Erebor, Bilbo Baggins returned to the Shire desolate, with but a little chest of riches as his prize. For years afterwards, he regretted having done so, wishing instead that he had stayed by the side of the one he loved. Yet, he knew his place. As Gandalf had said, he was quite a little fellow in the wide world. A little hobbit like him had no business being a consort to a dwarven king - it was not done.
That was why, when he and the King of Erebor met again, Bilbo didn't think once that the impossible his heart still longed for could ever come true.

Summary
Thorin wasn't sure why his siblings were deciding to be so damned difficult about it all. He had arranged his marriage to a hobbit from the Shire, sight unseen, and he wasn't groaning like Frerin or pouting like Dis over it.
Yes, maybe he did tell them they had to get married. Maybe he did side with their mother and say that, yes, they had to find someone decent, and yes, he did arrange for a courting season for them. He sees nothing wrong with that.

Erebor never fell, and it is a socially cut-throat place in the court. Thorin, anxious to get everyone settled and hopefully get an heir out of it all, has determined that it's time for all three siblings to settle down. What he doesn't expect is that the beautiful hobbit woman he's set himself up with is about to turn Erebor on its head and steal his heart while she does so.

He skidded to a hill on a hill that overlooked the main road that came from Bree, seeing a noble looking figure leading the group, including a few faces that he remembered from that night.
“Pa!” He called out gleefully, all eyes turning to him.
He waved but nobody waved back.
They all looked...sad.
His Pa stared at him for the longest time, and Frodo wasn’t sure what he saw, but whatever it was made him look away.
His Da wasn’t there.
