    The first time I rode a rollercoaster, I was about eight, I think. I was scared but my dad kept telling me it would be good for me. As soon as the lap bar came down I knew it was a horrible mistake. I turned to my dad and begged him to let me get out, but he just laughed. “Relax, kiddo, it’s gonna be fun.”

    At that point I was a crying wreck, but the teenager running the ride didn’t even seem to notice. I remember clutching the bar in front of me, watching my knuckles turn pale. I was, for just another few moments, safe. But I also wasn’t. I was going to fly into the air very shortly, and no one was going to do anything to save me.
