Eighteen months after Vecna is finally gone, Hawkins is supposed to be safe, but Will is still trapped in his own head. He has insomnia, and he ends up getting addicted to sleeping pills again just to get some rest.
Mike decides he is absolutely not losing his best friend, so he steps in to help Will.
Spending time together forces them to face the fact that they are completely in love with each other. Neither of them says it out loud yet, but they don't really have to—it's in everything they do as they fight the bad memories together.

No one ever talks about what happens after.
No one told Will that the monsters would never really leave him. No one told Will how being taken and possessed would sit in his stomach like a coiled-up vine. No one told Will how he'd never feel like himself again.
No one told Will what to do, now that the worst is over and he doesn't feel any better. No one told Will how to handle the after, the in-between of not dying and still feeling dead.
