Summary
So Mydei watches Phainon slumber, for there is nothing else to do, or so he tells himself. Like this, he can observe all he wants, and the mermaid can’t make a fuss. He brings a gentle hand to tuck his bangs behind his ear, and traces his fingertips down his jaw.
Even if he finds Phainon irritating, even if he wishes to be alone, he can’t relinquish the fact he saved him. Found him in the dark abyss and plucked him from his grave. For that, he does not know if he should be grateful, but he knows he should be less harsh with him.
Mydeimos tries to find a cure for his terminally ill mother, Queen Gorgo, but attempt after attempt he fails. On his last chance, he captures a mermaid, a creature whose flesh should solve his woes, but he can't bring himself to kill and sets him free.
And when his father learns of such an act years later, he condemns him to drown in the same ocean where he enacted his betrayal, only to be saved by the very same mermaid who brings him to a secluded island to heal.

The earrings are huge. Circlets of gold each with three teardrops of pearls, stamped with that eight-pointed sun and ringed with purple sapphires. Phainon comes to fondle them, to run his fingers over the embossed metalwork as the pet in his lap keeps perfectly and obediently still.
“These were my mothers,” the Good Prince says, as though the words are not his to give. "But they look prettier on you, my dear. I am sure of it.”
