Steve chooses not to take the shield back after Asgard and Oklahoma, leaving his position as Commander of SHIELD. Really, the thing is, he didn’t really have any plans past that.
Being the sap he is, of course he’d said yes to Make-A-Wish, and of course he’d said yes to the Harlem Urban Gardening Initiative, and of course he’d said yes to the fundraising gala for sickle cell anemia, and of course he’d said yes to the guest lecture at SUNY for the doctoral students of American Studies when a professor reached out asking him to speak on the state of all things, and of course he’d said yes to the interview for Oprah’s magazine focusing on the things he’s seen and where he hopes people find empowerment, and of course, at some point, he’d just lost track of what he was saying yes to.
Which is how he finds himself choking on hot wings answering deep questions he never thought he would answer for something to be posted on the internet.
Which, in turn, is how he finds himself staying with Tony in Seattle as he launches Stark Resilient's line of brand-new flying cars.
Trying to figure out who he really is.

Six years ago, without the Avengers Initiative there to save the day, scientist Dr. Eric Selvig sacrificed himself to save the world, the almighty demi-god Thor was lost to a terrible storm, and vigilante Iron Man – spotted with a nuclear weapon trying to take advantage of the situation – was forever labelled an enemy of SHIELD.
This is a comic book office AU, where Steve is defrosted a year too late, Thor has forgotten who he is, and no one knows Tony is Iron Man.
