He knew his life had direction and that this valence had been set ever since he first heard the name: something special and lyrical about it, the last stressed syllable, its consonance and alliteration.

It wasn't penance, he found, as his eyes followed the doctor's finger to a scan of his viscera. It wasn't the holy spirit. But all the same it was something alive inside of him. Stomach cancer.

"He imagines himself going back to that shitty little document hovel, clearing his throat with his hand cupping the half-open door.
"Uh, Greg? Just to clarify. It's not that I'd push Shiv down the stairs. It's that I'm scared she would do that to me.""
Greg and Tom go to Moscow and have a great time.

Summary
Terminally bored office worker Harper Praise chats with random people online to stave off her desire to die. By chance, she meets Van Der Gramme, a brashly egotistical pornographic artist who quickly becomes the sole interesting facet of Harper's nothing life. Chasing after him, she plunges into his online underworld of depravity and degeneracy, over which he presides like a spiritual guru—or a cult leader. Sex and art are the saviors he peddles, his medicine, his opiates, and Harper is desperate to surrender to them. But the real world—no matter how banal it seems—refuses to loosen its death grip so easily. By the end, everything will burn.

Summary
Albert doesn’t believe in ‘meant to be’. They don’t naturally mesh: Cooper wanted to do over the guest room with reed matting and make a meditation room; Albert wanted to make an office. So they built an office with a Zen garden. Albert appreciates sleek, modern furniture; Cooper likes Eastern antiques. So now their apartment is decked out in sleekly modern furniture imported from Tibet. Albert prefers quiet when he sleeps; Cooper drifts off listening to Tuvan throat singing. Albert has gotten used to earplugs. At each turn, one or both of them have seen their way through to a solution. The result is not so much a ‘normal life’ as it is a life that’s right for them, and insane for everyone else.
