Maki couldn't say, with mathematical precision, how long he had been dead.
For someone who no longer needs to fill their lungs with the icy winter air, time ceases to be a straight line punctuated by clock ticks and becomes a gray blur, a stagnant fog.
And there was Harua.
Harua was the only colorful thing in Maki's monochromatic world. He was a living, real boy who inhabited that same house, but who seemed to carry an invisible anchor tied around his neck. The instant Maki opened his eyes in that state of spiritual suspension and saw Harua for the first time, a violent and painful tug tore through his invisible chest.
Maki didn't know why, but he simply couldn't stay away from Harua. He was his shadow, his silent observer, the guardian of a mystery that neither of them could verbalize.

Harua had always known that Hirota Riki was not boyfriend material. You would think that his next-door neighbor would be a prime candidate for his romantic fantasies, but Maki has only proven himself to be a pain in the butt, ever since they were little. See, Harua’s forever crush, Nicholas, has just moved back into town, and — horribly, annoyingly — he’s hitting it off with Maki. Meaning that if Harua wants Nicholas to notice him, he needs Maki. Maki is his in.
But as Harua and Maki scheme to get Harua his perfect boyfriend, he’s shocked to find he actually likes being around Maki. And, as they continue to grow closer, he must re-examine everything he thought he knew about love — and rethink his own perception of what Happily Ever After should really look like.
