Traditional belief dictated that there is a vein that runs directly from the fourth finger on the left hand up the elbow, into the shoulder, and down to the heart. A single, undisturbed connection. The vein was given the Latin name Vena amoris or, directly translated, the ‘vein of love’. The supposed existence of this vein is cited as the reason why many Western cultures wear their engagement and wedding rings on that fourth finger on the left hand—the ring finger.
