Summary
Meng Yao knows Sect Leader Jiang's wife is pretty. She knows it was considered a good match, that a lot of people thought Jiang Cheng was lucky. She knows he didn’t feel lucky.
The things she doesn’t know: his wife’s name. What she looks like, besides being tall and pretty. Anything about her likes or dislikes, her personality (beyond “nice enough”), anything she could use against her as leverage. Nothing at all, really, except that she’s some sect leader’s pretty, young, talented, barren wife.

“You almost died? Oh my god, Meng Yao, are you okay?” Qin Su looks like she’s about to drop her mug. “Oh my god, do you have brain cancer? My dad will pay for everything, I promise, it’s going to be alright—”
“I get that it’s 8 AM and you’re hungover, but can you please stop making up problems for me to have? I don’t have brain cancer, I had low magnesium. I almost had a heart attack, it’s fine.”
“It’s fine?” Qin Su shrieks. “Meng Yao, you could have died!”
“But I didn’t, and it was a fluke, and it’s fine,” Meng Yao reiterates, “because my paramedic, and I do not exaggerate here, was the hottest man alive.”
There is a long moment in which they both consider one another.
“Are you fucking kidding me!”

Summary
Jin Guangyao hadn’t even wanted to come to the Eye to begin with.
He’d argued, over and over again, that they weren’t ready. He’d been in the first scouting party, the second, the third. If they tried to make it past the ascent, he told the commander of their flight group, they would all be turned to rock and ash on the approach. He’d seen it happen. It didn’t matter how strong, how many stars adorned your cape. The storm took down the strongest of them.

Nie Mingjue enjoys, as he will later wistfully remember it, a picture-perfect childhood.
Born the first son and only child to a well-respected, powerful sect leader and his just as accomplished wife, he grows up in prosperity and takes to the family traditions from the moment he can walk. Even as a toddler he tries to mimic the disciples’ moves with sticks and plays at night hunting while chasing rabbits in the mountains with his friends.
Or: The trials and tribulations of Nie Mingjue: growing up, meeting and befriending Lan Xichen (and this turning into something more), his troubled little brother, losing his parents, and becoming sect leader too soon.
