Summary
Bucky is helplessly in love with his roommate Sam. He could have dealt with his feelings not being returned, but Sam hated his guts, and that really hurt. Bucky knew he was a grumpy asshole with ugly scars and terrible social skills, he never had a chance from the start. The rest of his life isn’t so great either. He has to work two jobs to afford rent and he is just tired all the time. When a strangely charming customer suddenly takes an interest in him, things start to change.
Sam has a crush on his roommate. The guy is a real piece of shit, but Sam can’t help it. He had gotten used to it, but suddenly Bucky shows up with a… boyfriend? Sugar daddy? Why would he do that? The guy was homophobic after all…

“Wilson, I’m not a homo.”
Sam blinked. He didn’t exactly know what to say to that. “…uhm, are you sure?”
“Yes I’m sure.” He grumbled.
“I mean– we just had sex, but okay?”
“That wasn’t sex,” Bucky shook his head. “Sex is between a man and a woman.”
Sam buried his face in his own hands. He was not in the mood for this conversation.
“Get out.” He groaned.
“Excuse me?” Bucky said.
“Get out man, I’m not doing this with you.”

It was just supposed to be sex. Something to take the edge off and keep them distracted at the Avengers Compound, while they trained and trained and waited for world-ending missions that never seemed to happen anymore.
But a friends-with-benefits situation between the Falcon and the Winter Soldier was probably doomed from the start. Sam’s never been able to lessen how much he cares and play by the rules. Bucky can’t seem to keep his heart closed off and not get caught up in his emotions. And despite themselves, despite Bucky’s relentless nightmares and Sam’s guilt and grief, they fall for each other harder and deeper than they ever would’ve imagined.
Oh, and everyone figures it out. Everyone except Steve.

“I’m sorry.”
These are the first words that Bucky says to him and it irritates Sam beyond belief.
“That is not what I want to hear.” It comes on its volition and it’s painfully honest. Sam is not sure which words he is waiting for but those certainly are not it.
Bucky seems confused at this, pinches his eyebrows, scrunch his nose. “What?”
“I don’t care if you are sorry. That is not what I want you to say.”
“Sam. This is fucking psychotic. What the fuck am I supposed to say to you so you will-- Stop ignoring me. We were--are friends, right?”
No.
That is the issue, they were more than friends and they did not speak about it.
Why would they? It had been natural, with the exception of, maybe, honesty. Sex.
“Do you know you never said I love you to me?” Bucky says and it is the saddest thing Sam has heard, “Not once.”
“That is not--Why do you care? You know I love you- I welcome you into my family, even before that I went on the run for you. I always loved you.”
Bucky eyes widen, his jaw tightens and-- Looks down, covers his face with the vibranium hand. “Ah, shit.”
He is crying.

( set during avengers doomsday) sam & bucky have been on uneven terms ever since bucky sided with the so-called “New-Avengers”.
sam had cut all contact because of that. or so bucky thought. sam used it as an excuse to hide something bigger. the tension between them becomes impalpable when a new threat forces the two to rejoice.

No, Bucky Barnes is not fucking good.
He’s back to dealing with stupid gigs he didn’t choose with stupid hidden agendas and lives on the line. He’s trying to be a leader, but he’s right back to feeling unstable, and to tie it all off with a fucking bow Sam kisses him again and it feels like he’s regressed three years. Back to bad decisions, bad dreams, out of control and out of his hands. Back to barely breathing.
So, you can forgive him if his judgment is a little off.
Or; A governmental facility goes dark in Northern Virginia. The New Avengers receive their first mission; Sam Wilson follows.
