She apologized for moments that haven't happened but knew would come. Moments where Longclaw would have another episode and will forget Maureen altogether, moments where the pain in her heart would be too much and spill onto her daughter (Holy shit, her daughter. Longclaw wasn't even sure she should be calling her that).
Longclaw was raised for taking lives, not nurturing them.

Summary
Raising hedgehogs requires a glass jar with a lid. The hedgehog is placed inside the jar and the lid is then sealed. He is left undisturbed for three days. Then, when the jar is opened, the hedgehog will not run out. In fact, the hedgehog will never jump higher than the level set by the lid. This behaviour is now set for the rest of his life.
