Summary
He does his daily rounds: fill up the troughs with hay, top up the bird feeders with seeds, check the paths for any disruptions, leave out the rabies vaccine for the foxes, clear out the hunting towers to keep them ready for use, make sure no one is trespassing, and – once a week – drive to the nearby town to pick up his groceries. Every day the same birds sing when he wakes up, the same thorns scratch his shins as he walks his route, he hits his forehead on the same branches. It's all very beautiful and picturesque, with the pillars of light filtering through the canopy and turning the summer-dry grasses golden. It makes him stop and stare with breath stuck in his chest. Or, it did the first 40 times he saw it.
Everything gets boring after a while.
So, when he sees what looks like a human body peeking out from where it’s propped up against a tree trunk, he thinks to himself, Well, that’s new. -

He's leading you away. Through wave and storm, pickled in brine to his taste, but this fishing line has a hook on each side. You're both caught, luring each other.

Summary
The weather reminds him of Rio, back when he was little, living with his mother and spending his days at the beach. He’d run through the winding streets as she yelled at him to wait up. Then, as soon as his feet hit the sand he’d drop everything, including all of his mother’s warnings, and plunge into the water. He’d splash and swim and collect seashells and catch crabs in the net and get his fingers pinched for his efforts, then run to his mother for snacks and sun-warmth. On days like those, the sun was saffron yellow, and he was dry before the sting from the crabs’ pincers went away.
He can almost smell the breeze on the Scottish mountain air.(Snapshots of Gordon and Warren at Red Valley in 2064. No plot just doing laundry.)

Summary
Iruka had been having the dreams for as long as he could remember. After his parents’ death they had gone away for a time; then they’d come back with a vengeance, and he had spent the whole year he was fifteen in a haze, not sure whether he was really Iruka or whether he was another, younger boy who skipped stones and laughed and still had a living father.

Summary
That’s a fucking kid, is the first thing that Iruka thinks.
That’s the fucking jinchuriki, is the second.
The first thought comes back, even stronger, overwhelming him with outrage, with fury, with a sick sort of disgust, and now it comes out as a shouted,
“That’s a fucking kid.”

Summary
He feels the physical embodiment of devastated, his already too strung-out mind struggling to wall up all the hurt, the rejection—he takes a deep shuddering breath and looks down at the shredded skin on his arms, at the sluggish way they’re weakly healing.
There is nothing, nothing he wants more than to have Derek sweep in and make everything all better. He should have known, though, that something like that would never happen to him.
