EDITOR’S NOTE: This story, by an author giving themself the penname “Walter” (some attribute it to Henry Spencer Ashbee*), was published in 1888 – in Amsterdam, although the author is apparently British and the story is set mostly in London, England. I’ve taken it from online sources and fixed formatting problems as well as tidied and modernised some outdated language, vocabulary, punctuation, capitalisation, and spelling, all for clarity and readability.

I don't know if I would consider this especially hot, but it is FASCINATING. I am having a great time reading this as a historical document. I'm also incredibly impressed that it's survived -- the original print run only produced 25 copies, and it was widely banned after that, surviving only in abridged pirated copies until 1966 when it was published again in full in the US.
