High school AU!
Transferred from the UK to Vought Central High School in disgrace for “behavioural issues”, all Billy Butcher has is his Aunt Judy – and the ragtag bunch of misfits he’s fallen in with: MM, Serge and Kimiko.
And maybe that CompSci Club nerd, Hughie, who's a damned embarrassment in gym class, and annoying as fuck as Butcher's peer tutor in math – especially considering he's 2 years his junior.
Oh, and who Butcher took a punch from John Vogelbaum for.

“Just– wait up a sec.” Butcher stands up. “Wanted to– uh– Run something by you.”
Hughie narrows his eyes. “Okay…? Sure, what is it?”
“Thought we could, I dunno, grab a bite sometime. Nowt fancy, just–” –his hands are sweating– “–don’t make it weird, or shite. Y’know.”
“A bite,” Hughie repeats. “Do you mean– like dinner?”
Butcher scowls. “Christ, don’t say it like that. Sounds bloody… romantic.”
“Well,” Hughie says, “it sounds like you kinda just asked me to dinner.”
“Didn’t say dinner.”
“You said ‘grab a bite’.”
“Yeah, well that could mean anything, couldn’t it?” Butcher grumbles, ears burning.

“Someone’ll need to go in,” MM said. “And blend in.”
“I think there’s a pretty obvious choice here,” Butcher tipped his chin at Hughie. “Practically begging for a pegging.”
He anticipated the reddened ears, the flustered stammering, the humiliated, pink-cheeked scowl. Instead, Hughie shrugged, calm as anything.
“Sure,” He said. “I know the place.”

Alternate Universe - Hughie, worn down by the recent decimation of Robin by A-Train right in front of his eyes, spends long, dull days at his mind-numbing job - tech support for a small scientific facility. Driven by the sense of worthlessness at not fighting for justice, Hughie starts poking into the facility he works for - and finds ties to Vought itself, right under his nose.
And, in the Restricted underground levels, he finds an aquatic Supe trapped in a small, cylindrical tank. What's more, he swears he recognises that face from articles shared on those anti-Vought forums...
Hughie decides he needs to buck himself up; become an infiltrator for once. For Robin. And, maybe, for the unfortunate Supe floating in the water on the other side of the bulletproof glass.

Summary
It’s funny how quickly this has become routine for them. Distantly, he thinks about Pavlov and dogs and pretends he’s okay with how he’s growing fond of the bell that calls him.
It could never be love. Hughie knew that from the start, from the first ring of the bell. He knew what he was getting into, knew exactly who he was crawling into bed with, exactly who he was saying yes to, over and over and over. He also knew, from the start, that none of that was ever going to stop him coming back. He knew, from the start, that maybe nothing ever would.
But it’s nice - oh, so nice, so indescribably divine - when it happens. And, afterwards, well, it’s fine. Hughie’s fine. It’s routine. The fool doing his usual little dance. Drooling like Pavlov’s fucking dog at the sound of the bells on his stupid fucking hat.
Sometimes, Butcher “accidentally” says the softest, sweetest things in the heat of the moment, making Hughie absolutely melt for him. Weirdly, though, he always says them right around the time he wants Hughie to do something for him, keeping Hughie loyally chained right to his side.

Summary
Some nights, only once everyone is gone, Butcher finds Hughie in the basement staring into nothing, troubled. He yanks him up and drags him to his room. For a few hours, Butcher’s only as rough as Hughie lets him be. He’s all slow-moving calloused hands and scruffy beard catching against collarbone. The hands he tugs through Hughie’s hair and presses into his hips makes his grief go quiet.
Hughie tries to pretend that’s all it is. He doesn’t want to care as much as he does. He wants to do it like Butcher does, half-drunk and near-silent, thrusting into a coping mechanism. But beggars can’t be choosers, and Hughie won’t beg.

(Canon divergence from the end of Season 3 - Butcher doesn't get Supe powers)
God, Hughie’s a good lad. That’s still about the only words Butcher can bring himself to string together about it. It would make Butcher want to be good - but that isn’t something he can do.
Instead, he wants to rip apart anyone who ever wronged Hughie. He wants to be so violent, so grandiose, all for Hughie. That way, he’d never have to say the words. Butcher would burn the whole planet to the ground for Hughie.
But the Temp V poisoning gets worse all the time now, and will continue getting worse for the nine fucking months he has left. He can’t do a fucking thing for Hughie in his condition. He doesn’t deserve even a passing glance from him in return.

Summary
This reckless choice wouldn’t have happened if Butcher had acted like he used to - with brutal efficiency and no care for collateral damage. He could have thrown all of his power in one direction, wiped the Supe out and been fine. Hughie might have been close enough for her to hurt him, but she’d still be dead. That used to be Butcher’s way.
This time, Butcher has split his ribcage open to make sure Hughie's out of harm's way. Butcher has vivisected his own heart to save Hughie.
