Summary
In the first year of their marriage, Mary Hayward assembles three months of evidence without knowing she is doing it, presents her husband with a hypothesis, and discovers that the largest things can only be carried in small containers. Then autumn comes, and the two of them learn what they are to each other when there is nothing to be done — no argument to win, no book with the right chapter, no door Tom will consent to wait behind ever again.

Summary
She imagined a hundred scenarios, tried to believe that there was some way it might have played out differently, but there had been a dark finality in Mr Hayward's solemn gaze after speaking with Mr Ryder, and she was sure that was the crux of it.
I shall get to the bottom of it all, tomorrow, she resolved, they owe me that much.
What if Scafel went a little differently? What if Mary did not go gentle? What if she refused to let other people continue to make decisions for her? What if Mary made herself be brave?

Summary
"She had already helped to engineer Mary’s escape once before. The Gardiners, of course, had been very willing co-conspirators, and she had found a rather unexpected ally in Mr. Collins.
The task of reuniting Mary with Mr. Hayward, however, would not be nearly as simple. Nor could she guarantee that doing so would necessarily bring about a happy result.
However, if Lizzy’s instincts were correct, it had the potential to restore the happiness of more than just her beloved sister."
***
Mary makes the regrettable decision to return to Pemberley with her mother after refusing Mr. Ryder's proposal. Elizabeth Darcy sees an opportunity help her sister in a significant fashion. Hijinks ensue. Canon-divergent.

Summary
‘You were there when she collapsed. I remember your faces when I carried her to her room, how terrible it was. Holding Mary in my arms, looking down at her, she was so fragile and – ’ Suddenly, Tom took off his spectacles and wiped his hand furiously across his eyes. ‘Forgive me.’ More quietly, he repeated in an altered tone. ‘Forgive me, please.’
There had been times in the past two months when Tom’s inexplicable disappearance had disappointed her. But her heart ached for him now, for all he had said and what he had not, the suffering which was so palpable and the diffidence which had been so grotesquely exploited.

Summary
“What did Mr Hayward actually say, Mr Ryder?” she huffed, all worries about being rude out of the window. Mr Ryder had the decency to look ashamed as he spoke.
“He said that he would be in need of a wife for the chambers to take him seriously for promotion. It’s a question of status as much as anything, you understand. Tom said that…well, that it didn’t much matter who the wife was as long as they were vaguely tolerable.”
Mary felt her nose twitch. Her hands had balled into fists under the table in her lap.
“...Vaguely tolerable?”

Summary
Mary had, of course, warned him, in her careful and precise way, that her sisters were coming to London in a fortnight and would very likely call on Tuesday. She said this the way she said most things - directly, without embellishment, and as though the facts spoke sufficiently for themselves. Tom had nodded and thought: sisters. Yes. He had older sisters that he was very fond of. He found himself quite confused at the undertone of dread Mary seemed to have as she anticipated the visit. “I understand sisters very well, my dear!”
It turned out, he did not understand the Bennets.
