Plum-coloured eyes dart towards her own, widened in surprise. A second later, his brows fall from their raised position on his forehead and the muscles in his face relax into a decidedly less stressed expression. He shoots her a wan smile.
“I’m just pondering what we’ll do with the village chief. Amongst other things.” His words trail off with the second sentence, as he once again casts his gaze outside.
Bingo.
“Would you like a distraction, sir?”

He flipped through the book of photographs sometimes. For reassurance, maybe, that they were making a difference, that there was more to their existence than expeditions and dying and surviving. Other times he just wanted to look at her, to see her looking healthy again after a trip outside the walls ended less than ideally.

He remembers the feeling of his head exploding off his body and the earth quaking before him under the weight of millions of titans on the march, remembers the awful ruin and the craters and the puddles and the charred remains as he crawled after them on hundreds of ribs--but all of that is so far away. It’s so far away that he’ll never see it again. All he can see is Mikasa, smiling up at him.
It doesn’t matter what’s flowing through his veins or lurking in his bones or rattling around in his head. What matters is what he has in his arms.
