Summary
People have been disappearing from all over the county — whereas bodies have been turning up in empty fields. With no witnesses and fear spreading faster than rumors do, the law settles on the easiest culprit: the infamous Bangtan Gang. Outlaws — and murderers, apparently.
Park Jimin believes it, too. She begs the sheriff (her husband) to hunt them down and bring them to justice before someone else disappears. But when her own brother vanishes and her husband still refuses to act, Jimin takes matters into her own hands. Armed with little more than desperation, she rides into the wilderness alone.
Instead of finding her brother, however; she finds Jeon Jeongguk: a wanted outlaw with blood on her reputation, and with absolutely no intention whatsoever of confessing to crimes she swears Bangtan didn't commit — because members of her gang are missing, too. Eventually, Jeongguk offers Jimin a deal: spare her life and treat her wounds, and she will lead Jimin through the dangerous country beyond, find out who is really taking people, and bring her brother home.
Jimin would have to be a fool to trust an outlaw… but unfortunately, she's running out of options.

The boy swallows, his throat bobbing against the blade of the dagger. He looks up at Jimin for a long time, long enough that Jimin starts to think there’s no answer coming. Then his eyes water just before he closes them, lashes clumping as his tears slide down to his temples. He tips his chin up, baring his throat further deliberately.
“Please,” the Enigma begs, pressing up against the edge of the blade until it breaks skin, a thin line of blood welling up underneath.
