Jayce’s hand slides down from his forehead to rest on his shoulder, his fingertips just brushing his neck, which isn’t helping in the slightest. All it’s doing, in fact, is spurring on the heat already building inside of Viktor, fuel to the fire.
Viktor closes his eyes and hopes that none of this is becoming too obvious to Jayce.
“It seems I am… menstruating,” he says quietly.

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?

It is an old saying in Zaun— If they’re mean, they want a fight. If they’re clever about it, they want to fuck. If they do both, you’re in for a good night.
His approach to attraction is a cultural habit, one Viktor has never given much thought to because it has always been true. No one in Zaun flirts openly. They play, they provoke, they get under the skin. And if a partner snaps back just as sharp—well. That’s interest.
Piltovans as a whole don’t seem to understand this. They flirt in ways that are too clean, too direct, too painfully earnest. They go soft first, then ask permission to go softer.
Jayce is a Piltie. He does not have the stomach for the game.
At The Piltover Conservatory, the most prestigious and selective academy in the arts world, talent is everything.
After a disastrous first meeting, Jayce writes Viktor off as caustic, unimpressed, and apparently allergic to basic conversation.
In a twist of academic misfortune, they’re assigned to work together on a project that means months of high-stakes rehearsals and performances. Working together isn’t optional.
But music is built on tension, and dissonance isn’t always meant to be resolved.

Viktor doesn’t smile. “I just—these Pilties. They have every option, every resource. They live in high rises and pay for water births with coaches who call themselves moon-witches. Meanwhile, patients in Zaun are lucky if they know someone with an intact midwifery license, and even that doesn’t matter when their placental abruption happens at two in the morning and they can’t afford the ambulance.”
Jayce rubs a hand over his face. “Yeah. I mean, I’ve never been to a gynecologist either, but that’s more of a gender crisis thing than a crunchy trad-Pilt thing. You get it.”
He says it lightly, a snort or a roll of Viktor’s eyes expected.
But Viktor just goes very, very still.
