    From his post, Viktor had a perfect view of him, ever studious and ever handsome, so young. Anyone with eyes and an interest in men would find Jayce interesting to watch across the room, he often told himself. Viktor was no stranger to attraction, but his proclivity for alone time had relegated him to a few trysts over the years, largely physical, never lasting. Just enough to scratch the itch.

    Once a year, the Herald takes a virgin, offered up by the community and selected by His angels, to use for His pleasure. If the sacrifice survives, some, maybe all, in their niche of the commune will be blessed with the Herald’s touch a second and final time when they join the ranks of His gloriously evolved.

    It is a position of great esteem and great peril to be the Herald’s sacrifice. Many do not survive it. The fear, however, is not of death but of the failure that comes with it. There’s a great deal of mystery around it, but everyone knows a healthy, whole sacrifice is better.

    So when the angels arrive at Jayce’s door the day before the ceremony, anyone who knows him is not surprised.
