“Hi,” David says. “What can I get you?”
He receives a blink in return, like the boy didn’t think he’d get this far. “Uh, whiskey.”
“I’m gonna need to see some ID.”
“Right, yeah, of course,” the boy says, fumbling for his wallet. He pulls out a card and holds it out like he’s hoping David doesn’t look too carefully at it.
David plucks it out of his fingers and studies it. Immediately, he wants to frame it and hang it above the bar. It’s the worst fake ID he’s ever seen, and he’s seen a lot of fakes.

Michael’s head starts to hurt, and he didn’t know he could get a headache in his dreams. “Aren’t you dead?”
David blows out a long, steady stream of smoke. “Not sure why you’re asking me. We’re in your head, aren’t we?”
“So this is just a dream?” Something about David feels so real. Like Michael could reach out and touch him, feel the cool surface of his skin. For some reason, he can’t bring himself to do it.
