Summary
I will admit: I find John Watson among the hardest of characters to write, because the soul inside that fuzzy jumper is much tougher, more complex, and more conflicted than John Watson wants even himself to know.
This particular story took me a bit longer to write than some do. It's tangled and complicated.
For those who want to know going in: It's not slash. It's reasonably pro-Mary Morstan. It comes at John's deep love for Sherlock from a different direction than it would if it were slash. I hope it's good. I hope you enjoy it.

So well written. Characters we know but learn more deeply through this lens. Made Remembrance Sunday very real. A deeper look into the many ways John is mad at the world for not being fair and forthright as he wants it to be. Major Sholto is a fully drawn character here and points out other perspectives, as a good commander probably ought. Salutes to warriors, whatever their stripe.

To the doctors at Bethlem, Scott Holmes is the "Devil's Son," a patient whose scarily accurate predictions and "Moral Insanity" have driven his previous keepers to the brink. To Dr. John Watson, he's just a malnourished patient who needs to take his bromides.
Fresh from the horrors of the frontier, Watson is too tired to be impressed by Holmes's theatrics and too bitter to care about his genius.
