Summary
Ramona remembers that day. She remembers the sounds of her brother’s celebratory cheering, the citrusy remnants of tequila sitting heavy upon her tongue, and the sight of the Medellin drug kingpin’s body lifted onto a stretcher and hauled into the back of an ambulance.
She hadn’t really cared to follow the recent news coverage on the downfall of Pablo Escobar, too absorbed in the excitement of her own life to care for narco politics.
Yet now, she found herself unable to look away from the grainy scene, as the news camera slowly panned out to show the people of Medellin grieving. It was unbelievable - how the city continued to serve the man until the very end.
She remembers scoffing at Mrs Escobar's pleas for asylum following the death of her husband, incomprehensible of how a woman so helpless could have loved a man so monstrous.
But when she found herself beckoned from the memory by the enticing void of the beast’s eyes - the beast that was a man, the man that was her husband - she felt that, for the first time in her life, she understood Tata Escobar, better than she ever thought she would.
