    Ilya doesn’t seem to go out much, aside from the few times Shane sees him leave and return dragging two armfuls of groceries. He slips out onto the fire escape several times a day, every day, to chainsmoke and look miserable. It’s only natural, given the sheer amount of time he spends out there, that Shane would cross paths with him while using his own patio.

    Shane has a four year plan to captain his college hockey team and join the MLH, but none of that will happen if he gets lung cancer from all the cigarette smoke his smartass new neighbor produces, or if he keeps wasting his time meeting him on the fire escape.

    The other side of his brain is going: He's hurt you, and you've probably hurt him too, and what if this is your only chance to talk about it? What if Paris makes the difference?

    Five months after Sochi, Shane's set to play a charity hockey game in Paris. So is Ilya.

    They run into each other in the lobby of their hotel the night before. Twelve hours stretch out in front of them, and Ilya suggests something different: no phones, no expectations, no past, no hockey. Just the city, and whatever they can be when nobody else is watching.

    It's obviously a terrible idea, but Shane says yes, anyway.

    “Worried about me, Hollander?”

    A few months ago, Shane would’ve called him an asshole and left him in this dingy hospital room alone. A few months ago, Shane would’ve rolled his eyes and thrown back a line about wanting to ensure all his patients were looked after and how he had a responsibility, especially to members of his own firehouse. Hell, a few months ago, maybe Shane wouldn’t have even been here in the first place.

    But today, after the scare he’s had and the hours he’s spent really coming to terms with… well, everything, Shane just nods tiredly.

    “I was. I was terrified actually. I haven’t left this hospital since I rolled in doing chest compressions on you because we couldn’t get your sinus rhythm back and your heart stopped.”

    The police officers settled themselves across from Ilya.

    “Mister Rozanov, are you the son of Officer Gregorei Rozanov, brother of Officer Alexei Rozanov, and uncle of Anastatia Rozanova?” Panic for himself was quickly replaced by panic for his family. 

    “Yes, I am. Are they alright?” Something flashed in the blue eyes of the officer, it looked like sadness. 

    “I am truly sorry to tell you this, Mister Rozanov. No, they are not.”

    In a timeline where Russia doesn’t loose to Latvia and then doesn’t loose at all, everything changes. Olympic gold medalist Ilya Rozanov becomes a single father to his niece and Shane becomes publicly engaged to another man.
