When Jon gets back into the kitchen, he finds Barbrey berating the new waitress. He’s heard Gilly call her Sarah or Sasha or something. No use learning her actual name when none of the new hires ever last longer than a few months.
Jon’s gaze flickers at her. Silky red hair, lightly freckled cheeks, and bright blue eyes. Once, he caught her smiling at a patron and was struck by the thought that she’s the most beautiful person he’s ever laid his eyes on. And that she doesn’t belong in a dump like this.
Two more weeks, he thinks idly as he takes the new order tickets. He bets she’ll come running out of here in two weeks when it all gets a bit too much. Maybe a customer gets too aggressive or their boss spouts some bullshit too difficult to stomach. There’s always something.
He can’t help but hope to be wrong.
