Though her sisters took the more traditional dark curls and even darker clothes customary of the Blacks, Narcissa herself bathed in milky whites. A white rose, so the Daily Prophet always proclaimed her: the porcelain doll, the feathered dove, the untouched pearl of the House of Black. Perhaps it was her platinum hair that had convinced them, or the pale tint of her skin, but something in Narcissa’s image was ivory, always had been, and her parents were determined to keep it that way.

Whimpering, Nikolai dropped his head in apology. He hated when Zoya was upset with him. He hated to see the disappointment in her eyes, hear the sweetness evaporate from her voice. Her nails dragged harshly over his scalp and buried into the base of his neck, lifting his head to look at her. Then, just as Nikolai was about to babble out an apology, she forced the collar between his parted lips and left it there, suspended between his teeth. He frowned, startled, but Zoya only smirked at him.
“Puppies use their mouths,” she said sweetly, “so be a good dog and stay while I fetch your toys.”
