    “What do you think of family?” Ilya frowned faintly.

    “My family? Is fine. They live in Russia.” His tone already carried reluctance, disinterest in wherever this might lead.

    “Oh. Okay. That’s… cool, I suppose.” Shane hesitated, then pushed again. “What about your own? Like someday.” Ilya’s gaze sharpened. “Why are you asking? You cook dinner to talk about family?”

    “No. I’m just curious. Humor me.” Ilya exhaled, dismissive. “Extra baggage. Family is extra baggage.”

    Shane faltered, words tangling. Ilya's words rattled him. He can't be an additional weight Ilya has to carry. “What if I wa… I have… I mean we’ve been together for a few years no-"

    That snapped something. Ilya spoke not letting Shane finish, “Hollander, there is no we. What are you saying.” The agitation rose fast, almost defensive. "This is just sex. If I want baby, I sleep with girls.” He chewed his food like it offended him.

    “Yes, but wha-”

    “Hollander, give it a rest. I’m tired. We meet, we fuck, we recharge, we leave. That is it.”

    “Of course. Of course.”

    By the second period, it was clear even to fans in the farthest, cheapest seats that something unusual was taking place on the ice.

    “This Centaurs lineup has been playing some pretty solid hockey lately, but tonight they seem to have slipped back into old habits,” one commentator said.

    “Rozanov and Barrett do not look like line-mates, that’s for sure,” the other commentator agreed, disbelief in his voice.

    “Seems like Rozanov’s forgotten which team he’s playing for.”
