"I don't understand." Jannik looked from the Roland Garros representative over to Alex, and then to Carlos, who was sitting on the couch next to him. "When there's cameras you want us to pretend we're… friends?"
"We are friends." Carlos dazzled a smile at the rep, a brunette woman who seemed unable to stop smiling around her enormous teeth.
"Bien, we were hoping, maybe, that you make it look like… even more than friends." She smiled widely. "How do you say? Play it up for the cameras."
Ahead of Roland Garros, Jannik and Carlos are asked to play up their relationship off the court to drive interest in their rivalry.
But what starts as an innocuous game of media baiting soon develops a plot of its own until only one thing is certain: Not every narrative is a rivalry, and not all stories need to be shared with the public.
